Thanks much for the suggestions. The trouble is , I really want to use music that has a certain sound ...Middle Eastern/ Armenian/ Turkish, not only because I like the way it sounds but because it has a beat structure that works well with shadow puppetry. Honestly I didn't know how much I liked what inspired me to start this process, until I was listening to some tracks one can buy from various royalty free music companies on the web. By contrast, much of what they are selling in this same vein is wishy washy; ok but not great. .. kind of like muzak versus some really excellent ,passionate work on the CD I apparently fell in love with. Alas! Here in Mississippi, there aren't many traditional Middle Eastern players around to hire, either. One thing that I did just learn from the web exploration is that the price the fellow quoted me is apparently ballpark for licensing music.
I guess that puts it at more than $100 a pop, to pay a $50 per gig play royalty and then, I guess, another $50 on music fees. It ain't just gasoline that's gotten expensive !

If you e-mail this guy and offer to buy one or two of his CD's I
wouldn't be surprised if he let you use some of the online samples
either for free or nearly so. (or maybe the whole CD). This guy is
from Wales, but he currently resides in Holland. He puts out a
Podcast of Music he and others put together with the Vienna Symphonic
Library instruments. He has a Podcast called the VSL Podcast. Give
it a listen and listen to the samples on his website. He is really
good and a very nice and unselfish guy. I think it would be worth
your while to give it a try.
Good Luck, and tell him a podcast listener referred you to him.
