It is currently available through the Puppetry Store at the PoA as well as Amazon.com. With beautiful illustrations by Judd Palmer of the Old Trouts, the volume would make a delightful holiday gift! Joyeux Noel! I hope to bring out a volume dedicated to translations of puppet scripts specifically starring Polichinelle (the Gallic Punch), but "Merchant" features several Commedia characters, including Pierrot, Arlequin, and Cassandre. If people buy this first one, perhaps we could publish a second. I'd love to be able to sit in an audience someday and see some of these old plays performed, but right now I stage a few of them myself. For my sister's wedding this Saturday, I will present one of them at the couple's wedding reception. Bless you all, particularly if you buy a copy of "Merchant of Blows-with-a-Stick"-- Sean K. -----Original Message----- From: Michael Richardson <zenchops59-AT-yahoo.com> To: puptcrit-AT-puptcrit.org Sent: Wed, Nov 14 9:00 AM Subject: Re: [Puptcrit] UBU Yo Ed, I'm planning on using Cyril Connolly's translation of UBU CUCKOLDED, which very definately is still controlled by a literary agent regarding liability for royalties. I supppose that if you can find a 100 year old translation, or translate it yourself, or perform it in French, then no royalty would be due. But I am no expert in this area.... and would love to have a different option other than the $50 per gig " tax ". My production of this play is being developed as something close to, " Wayang Ubu ", because it will use both Indonesian-inspired puppets, and be entirely presented by myself, as a one person show. I'd started on this project many years ago, back before I shelved this puppet career for a decade. In 2001, I re-opened my puppet company using this same play as the first project that this more recent company, Red String, put out there. I taught a course at Tulane University and had my students ( 5 ) perform this play as their main objective for the course. They used everything I'd made up to that point, and made the missing parts themselves. I was pleased with the outcome.... and decided to go ahead and push the thing forward as a commercial, one-man presentation. Since that time, I've finished producing all cast members, with the final piece of scenery for this play being cut right now in Indonesia. Like all my puppets, these wayang that I design are cut from transparent buffalo hide, which I then paint with transparent watercolors. I continue to understand more and more about the traditional Javanese wayang theatre, reasons for design and techniques of presentation, etc., the further and further I deviate from it. This play definately will have left the station in many ways from a wayang play... but it is fascinating to observe where it is also so clearly related. This is also the first production I've ever done where I am not the author. So... tell me then, how are you planning to handle the far more complex UBU ROI ? regards, Michael Ed Atkeson <edatkeson-AT-earthlink.net> wrote: >>> Sorry Daniel if I took you for a fat cat. Maybe I did a poor job of describing my project too. I'm working on this wayang version ( my own puppets designs ) for Jarry's play, UBU CUCKOLDED. ----------------- Michael R, Off the subject, but... Are you sure you have to pay for the Ubu Cocu? It's over a hundred years old. Well, I didn't really find a date for Ubu Cuckolded, but Uby Rex was 1898 and I fugure Ubu Cuckolded must have been soon after, and Jarry died in 1907. I'd love to know more about your production since I'm doing Ubu Rex next year. best, Ed A _______________________________________________ List address: puptcrit-AT-puptcrit.org Admin interface: http://lists.puptcrit.org/mailman/listinfo/puptcrit Archives: http://www.driftline.org --------------------------------- Get easy, one-click access to your favorites.
