Dear Fay,
The Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry might be of interest to
you. Also, Great Small Works' International Festivals of Toy Theater
(the next one will be in May at St. Ann's Warehouse in Brooklyn) have
always featured a "Temporary Toy Theater Museum" and toy theater
workshops.
The Bread and Puppet Museum in Glover, Vermont is also an amazing
place and national treasure of the U.S.

Subject: [Puptcrit] research on "museum puppetry"

Dear Puptcritters,

I am a first year postgraduate student in Royal Holloway University of
London (Drama and Theatre Department) and have been a lurker on the list
for
the last months. Before coming to London, I worked at the Athens
University
Museum's education and activities department, and have also worked in
Greece
as a puppet director and performer for the last few years.

My present PhD research is about the use of puppetry in museum
education. I
have just begun the explorations of this field, and have been in
correspondence over the last months with Patricia O'Donovan (who is head
of
UNIMA Israel and worked in many Israeli museums and has a PhD in
zoology),
Robert Poulter in England (who creates toy theatre shows related to
science
and art exhibitions) and others. I have also ordered a copy of the video
of
Lewis Latimer: Renaissance Man, African American Inventor, a puppet play
by
The Brewery Troupe and the Smithsonian's Lemelson Center 'that tells the
story of African American inventor Lewis Latimer' (
http://www.iteaconnect.org/Publications/LemelsonProducts.pdf
<http://www.iteaconnect.org/Publications/LemelsonProducts.pdf> ). I have
also investigated the very limited literature in this field. I am
planning
to set up a webpage (possibly on MySpace or a Blog) dealing with my
research.

I was wondering if there is any way of learning more about the personal
experience in this field of members of this about creating shows to be
performed in museums that relate directly to museum collections or
exhibitions. I would be happy to be contacted directly or through the
list!

Sincerely Yours,

Fay Tsitou
