I had the opportunity to spend a day in Vienna last January kind of
unexpectedly. I stumbled upon the Theatre Museum and was delighted to see
the Teschner puppets in a room to themselves. The puppets are quite amazing
to see up close. His theater with the circular proscenium was in the center
of one wall with rows of chairs lined up in front of it. Fliers in the room
gave me the impression that they were presenting live performances with his
puppets periodically. I am curious if any of our European puptcritters can
confirm or correct this impression.

I'm hoping to find some time over the holidays to update my website and get
some photos from the Theatre Museum in Vienna and the museum at the
Obraztsov theatre in Moscow added.

Excellent to see that the Teschner nativity play is available online via
google video. Teschner filmed a fair number of his productions in the 1930s
- I have seen excerpts from perhaps half a dozen of his productions in the
Theatre Museum in Austria. There is also a one minute clip in a newsreel
available via the British Pathe website. (Go to
http://www.britishpathe.com/product_display.php?searchword=Teschner and
click on add to basket and then download video and fill in your email addres
and you'll be sent a wmv file of this) I discuss Teschner in my recently
published articlein Asian Theatre Journal, Contemporary Wayang in Global
Contexts, and include a number of photos that haven't been published
previously.
