Dear Alan Cook,

And please-- call me John.
I should certainly say you know who Wolo was! Wow! I guess my question was somewhat akin to asking Albert Einstein if he knew anything about physics!

The murals hung in the New Pisa Restaurant on Green Street in San Francisco. Wolo had painted them for his friend Dante Benedetti-- himself a well-known San Francisco figure, who owned the restaurant. One of the murals even says "to my good friend Dante..", etc. etc.

I managed that restaurant five years ago, after Dante had sold it to the Ginellas, and I discovered the murals rolled up in a closet. I remembered that they had formerly hung upon the wall, though, during a previous era, when I had also worked there. Later, when the new owners approved my idea of contacting Dante's daughter, to offer all the potentially meaningful memorabilia to her (a goldmine of stuff was sitting in boxes in the attic, etc.), I did so, and she twice arrived with a truck to load it all up. There was so much stuff there that I asked if she minded if I kept that bag of murals and she said of course, so I came across them legitimately.

They have been rolled up for most of the intervening years, but dry, and not sticking together or anything like that. They're in pretty good shape, excepting some small discolorations not on the characters themselves, that might be consistent with the bar environment in which they hung.

So there you have it, Mr. Cook. Anything you can...align me with will be very much appreciated.

I really want to thank you for taking all this time. I also appreciate the enthusiasm that comes through in your writing. may you never lose it!
Regards,
John Burton

Dear John Burton,

Your news about two Wolo Murals that you have is most interesting. Do you know what restaurant they had been in? Are the two wallpaper panels flat now or rolled?

So yeah, I know who Wolo was.

Alan CookI am not knowledgeable about pricing murals---were these mounted on walls or were they ever displayed somewhere? Are photos available? What are dimensions?
