Subject: [Puptcrit] Puppets in Naples

Hello Susan,

Naples is the home of Pulcinella so you should be able to find puppets. In
the 18th century, an Irish tenor traveled to Naples to study music and wrote
about seeing Pulcinella puppet shows in his memoirs (the spectators were
scolded by a priest after the show). This singer was especially found of
puppets because he started his career with roles in marionette operas
presented by an impresario in Dublin. Hopefully, you can find some shows
while you are in Napoli too. I would suggest checking out:

NOVITA ALL=B9ISTITUTO DELLE GUARATTELLE

Bruno Leone is Artistic Director
Massimo Perez is Director of Research (I think)

Contact info:

I TEATRINI: 081 19567674
I TEATRINI. Via Vergini, 19. 80137 NAPOLI

I also came across this address and am not sure which is correct:

I TEATRINI. via S. Teresa degli Scalzi, 134. 80135 NAPOLI

You'll probably have the best luck asking around for Pulcinella and
"burattini" (hand puppets). The tradition of rod marionettes (similar to
those in Sicily) was also practiced in the Napoli area but I don't think any
troupes are still active.

And for Mary, let me know if you want some suggestions. I'll try to dig up
contact info for you but when in Venice, be sure to check out the civic
museum. They have a wonderful display with some old commedia dell'arte
marionettes.

Have fun!
