I concur with Steve: "The Magic Onion" is of that era.

Richard, did you write a book on children's theatre that was published by
Rosen in its Theatre Student Series, just as George Latshaw's book was?  Or
was that another author of the same name?

I think you are thinking of the Magic Onion by Bil Baird which did appear in

a women's magazine in the 60s

The Henson pattern came later
