If we fail to notice and to complain, then the BIG MESS is our fault too. The Asian stock markets dropped yesterday, but "officially" we are not yet (?) in a recession, while communities struggle for funds and people are losing their homes . What a legacy! How often have I crossed paths with other puppeteers who, when asked, have boasted, "things are booming," when I knew they really weren't. Just the other day, I spoke to the son of another performer (a dancer, not a puppeteer) who had appeared at a showcase, and asked how it went. I was told that he suffered an accident on stage, and was bleeding so profusely, that his performance had to be cut short, and that being so embarrassed, he ultimately left the showcase a day early. Later on, I saw this guy and, without letting on, asked how things went. His exact words were, "Triumphant. The bookings are pouring in!" Honesty may be the best policy, but it takes courage. Meanwhile, here in the U.S., the George W. Bush Administration has delivered a new budget. Without Congressional action, funds to National Public Radio will be slashed in half, funds to the National Endowment for the Arts will be reduced to an amount that is lower than when Bush took office 7 years ago, and there will be no money - zero - for arts education. This November, please vote, and remember to which political party George Bush belongs.
