Felt pens are the way to go...
look for Chartpak or Prismacolor.

They make a series of warm or cool greys...alcohol based inks.
I've tested them for years...minimal fading...and they work
beautifully on fur!!!

you could use leather dye thinned with alcohol...but the black is very blue....
