Subject: [Puptcrit] As a Katrina person myself......


       Even as a Katrina person myself ( 5 feet of water went through my home here in Gulfport MS ) and about as yellow of a yellow dog democrat as you'll find,  I actually think Bush's handling of New Orleans is the least of his blunders. No one quite fathomed Katrina and its impact. New Orleans is a city with some unique, challenging conditions so far as limited evacuation access.  The overwhelming tragedy of Katrina cannot be understood unless you see it yourself, because the true horror of it was the scale of the destruction. It's everywhere.
  Literally more than 100 miles of the coast of Mississippi was torn to pieces for about the first 2 or 3 blocks back from the beach,  from where houses used to stand.The City of New Orleans filled up water faster than anyone could imagine..... with a storm unlike anything it had ever seen. How does one "prepare " for anything like that ?
   
          Since we are on our respective soapboxes, I'd like to take a moment to thank everyone who has shown such kindness and support for we folks along the  Gulf coast. Yes, even the Republicans. Even many of the people who are fairly opposite of many of my ideas. It has deeply touched all of us, living here, to see the church groups, the Red Cross, the government.... everyone reaching out to help.What a wonderful thing if we could mostly
  remember the solidarity first, and the differences, second.
