Subject: Re: [Puptcrit] Preparing a production

Different strokes for different folks. I know a number of pupperteers
do what Christopher suggested - book it to force yourself to reach
some level of completion. I personally can't work that way. I have to
feel really good about a show before I will offer it for booking.
Once the initial scripting and building is complete and I have
learned it well enough I perform it for my wife and daughter and
small groups of friends and then at larger parties. Just about every
one of my shows has "premiered" at a close friend's Xmas dinner party
where she has many friends and neighbors of all ages. Many of the 25
or so people at the party have seen me perform at local historic
sites and libraries and know my work and enjoy being the test
audience. I continue to perform for several other private parties and
sometimes at the Puppetry Guild of Long Island's meeting. Although I
can get some great suggestions during these test performances, the
real feedback comes during the actual performances when I can feel
the audience's reaction to different parts of the show and what works
for me. By the time I've put a show through this party and guild
meeting circuit it has been altered, tailored and learned well enough
to be offered for actual booking. Hope this helps.
