Not to discourage you, but... I've come up against this when writing a radio 
commercial in which I wanted to use a famous recording of a famous song. I 
learned I had to get permission from A) the composer, and 2) the record label, 
neither of which was a simple or economical proposition. I ended up rewriting 
the radio spot to make it work with a piece of royalty-free music.

I'm not in any way advocating violating any copyrights, but you could proceed 
on the assumption that a lone puppeteer doing a live performance, with no 
cameras taping and therefore no broadcasting over the airwaves, falls under the 
category of "small potatoes" and won't be seen by anyone in a position to make 
you stop using the song, and/or slapping you with a hefty fine.

What's the saying? It's easier to ask forgiveness than to ask permission.
