I've come up against this when writing a radio commercial in which I wanted to use a famous recording of a famous song. I learned I had to get permission from A) the composer, and 2) the record label, neither of which was a simple or economical proposition. I ended up rewriting the radio spot to make it work with a piece of royalty-free music. I'm not in any way advocating violating any copyrights, but you could proceed on the assumption that a lone puppeteer doing a live performance, with no cameras taping and therefore no broadcasting over the airwaves, falls under the category of "small potatoes" and won't be seen by anyone in a position to make you stop using the song, and/or slapping you with a hefty fine. What's the saying? It's easier to ask forgiveness than to ask permission. Linda ************** The year's hottest artists on the red carpet at the Grammy Awards. Go to AOL Music.
