I have also read the book "Say kids, what time is it?" by Stephen Davis. He does indeed say that it was The Mickey Mouse Club that took Howdy's audience. I don't have the book in front of me, but he describes how MMC started first and if his mother knew he was watching it, made him turn it off at midpoint to watch Howdy (which his father directed). This upset him very much as he often had to miss "Spin and Marty" or one of the other serials. Then Howdy at some point was relegated to Saturday mornings, just as Kukla, Fran and Ollie had been kicked to Sunday afternoons in the early '50s by NBC.
So in fact it was not only the Mouse, but also his Mouseketeers, who were responsible for the demise of Howdy...
