I'm sure that Steve will correct me, but if the system is patented  
then you can't use it without paying the patent maker.
My father has a patent on a form of Exit Sign that uses cool light  
LEDs. If someone wants to manufacture them, they have to pay him a  
fee (which has happened)

difference between copyright, patent, and trademark for people during
