Subject: [Puptcrit] Millions of muppets before Henson?

Gee whiz-

I've been going to puppet shows all my life, and collecting quite a few puppets along the way.

How did I miss seeing all those millions (MILLIONS?) of pre-Henson Muppets?

I suspect cuz they weren't there.

Things are not created in a cultural vacuum, and that includes puppets. But Jim was something new.

As has been pointed out, the Henson career was basically created in a TV studio with a TV camera, all new technology. Earlier TV puppet geniuses (Burr Tillstrom, for one) began puppet careers with live-audiences in theatres. Jim happened to be born in the right time frame for the shift in how puppet performance was delivered to viewers. And he was quite aware of this.

Millions? A little exaggeration goes a long way.

Skeptically,
ALAN COOK

Before the muppets there were millions of such puppets, Henson took his
ideas from past performers and styles and designed his own, everyone steals
ideas.. period even henson, so this needs to be put to rest.
There are no original ideas only personal designs made from others that one
combines.
