Subject: [Puptcrit] Risks

What a futile debate! Broadway...BIG Theatre....High end technology....non of this is risk taking! None of this is cutting edge! Who could afford to take "risks" with a multi-million dollar budget???? Was the Lion King a "risky" venture? or Avenue Q? NO! An important development for puppetry, a quaint development for entertainment but ground breaking, cutting edge stuff????? No. And whats with this seperating theatre cfrom puppetry...wether its legitimate theatre or illegitimate???? Are we going to seperate lighting states, seating plans, hair colour of the audience. So where is the cutting edge in theatre? Any theatre? Its in tents, in abandoned factories, in Circus's, In Rock Musicals, in church halls out the back of Buffalo...Anywhere a risk can be afforded. Where is the technology developing that will next year bring a new block buster show to life? On some ones kitchen table, in the attic of a shop, on a napkin at the pub (The puppet designer of Dinasours made all the mechanics out of cardboard scraps first...now they are life sized creatures prowling the stage).http://www.australianstage.com.au/reviews/melbourne/walking-with-dinosaurs---the-live-experience-236.html
As for "technology" being the avante garde of puppetry......a child holding a twig or a faceless calico doll will have more impact than the most sophisticated technology if it isnt integrated into the rest of the production and the puppeteer doesnt believe in it (the puppet).
Does that answer your question?
