Subject: Re: [Puptcrit] weatherproof material

Paul,
Sorry to not write in sooner on this. As a puppeteer, and avid
backpacker, I can say pretty categorically that Gortex is not what
you want. For one, Goretex, and the scads of other waterproof-
breathable fabrics that are now out there are wonderfully hi-tech,
but not really designed for what you need. They aren't really that
sturdy- good for a jacket, but bad for a any real abrasion. Gortex
was design to keep water out, but to allow water vapor pass through,
basically letting the perspiration vapor from your body escape, but
keeping the rain out. But it is pretty darn expensive, and it doesn't
work well when it gets dirty. Flats on a car don't sweat-hopefully-
and fabric loaded on top of a car is going to get dirty. I agree with
your previous reply that a big tarp from Harbor Freight is a much
better way to go. French seams are good, and a seam sealer might be
good as well for wet weather.
