> The Graduate Centre for Study of Drama is pleased to present
> Performance Research at the Centre, playing at the Studio Theatre
> from March 12th-16th. This double-bill featuring the devised puppet-
> based piece Home and Away and the experimental performance research
> project Performative Exercise converges theory with practice to
> innovatively explore how actors engage with their bodies, with the
> space in which they are performing, and with the audience that is
> watching them.
>
> Created by a collective of artists based on their individual
> experiences, Home and Away examines the emotional dimensions of
> migration. Through the use of found objects and specially
> constructed puppets, this piece tells stories that explore external,
> physical relocation and the feelings of alienation and dislocation,
> awe and wonder that come with it. An experiment with space, scale,
> and size, Home and Away demonstrates the ability of puppetry to
> communicate with an audience in unique and emotionally compelling
> ways. Part of the performance will involve audience interaction;
> audience members are encouraged to bring along a small object that
> reminds them of home or away for the purposes of this exercise.
>
>
> Another collectively devised work, Performative Exercise showcases
> the company=92s ongoing investigation into the effects of exertion on
> performance and reception. Taking an interdisciplinary approach that
> draws on research from such areas as exercise physiology, biology,
> and theatre studies, Performative Exercise features a series of
> scenarios and exercises that explore the limits of actors=92 bodies.
> By varying conditions of physical stress in performance=97through the
> use of tools ranging from stationary bikes to physical improvisation
> to human hamster wheels--these visually compelling experiments
> demonstrate how physical intensity affects the theatrical experience
> on a practical and an artistic level. Audience response will be
> welcomed to help understand how altered levels of exertion affect
> spectators=92 perceptions of performance.
>
> Innovative, engaging, and entertaining, Performance Research at the
> Centre invites the audience to see their relationship to performance
> in a new way. Home and Away is directed by James Beauregard Ashby,
> devised with Lori Nancy Kalamanski, Zoe Ludski, and Grey Muldoon.
> Performative Exercise is directed by Chris Jackman, devised with
