Congratulations, Nancy! =A0The video clip showed off the puppets well.
=A0And you're spot on, one should think, in your comments below. =A0each new
production, of any theatre piece, is its own 'long ride', even if
previous productions, or the script, at least, might serve as a road
map.

Thanks, Mark.
It's interesting to me, the comments regarding this production from
puppeteers
and theatre folks. Interesting because Paula Vogel wrote a script which
has been
produced many times by many theatre organizations, and the feeling I get
from
some is that Basil Twist's work should be considered definitive, as the
original
designer. (btw- the Magic Theatre production was not the original, that
was done
more than a year after the premiere, and Basil freely admitted how
grateful he
was to Ms. Vogel for writing a play which could be produced by so many,
giving
him the opportunity to work for so many companies in their productions).
And
don't get me wrong- I saw the Magic production, and thought Basil's work
was
beautiful.
It's interesting because when a play becomes available to theatre
producers,
they may select it to become part of their season, and then they?will
then find
the designers and actors within their communty to produce it. This play
has, and
will continue to have a different collaborative team working on the
show,
wherever it is done. Perhaps it will always be compared to shows that
Basil
worked on. I accept that challenge. My main concern, however,?is with
the
quality of the show for the audiences here in Portland, based on my
interpretation of the script, and my work?with the director and
designers. I am
fortunate that the director of the show has the overall vision which
incorporated the puppets and interpreted their role within the overall
context
of the play respectfully.
The interesting thing is that this is a great example of how the puppet
theatre
and the established 'actors' theatre might learn from each other.
Puppeteers
aren't accustomed to seeing their characters, sets and scripts
reinterpreted by
other people.
Paula Vogel has done us a great service, and the response in the theatre

community has been great. Let us not, as puppeteers, deny the creativity
which
each production team will bring to it. Don't we want puppets to be more
widely
accepted within the theatre??We do not?have to be Basil Twist (or Julie
Taymor,
or any other of the current stars of puppetry) to create quality
theatre.?
Personally, I have seen many productions of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer's
Night
Dream." I would not consider any of them definitive. It's always fun to
see how
each production differs. Some are better than others, in my opinion.
Thanks for your input and attention,
Nancy

Jim,
I found your response to the posted trailer -interesting-
Because mine was just the opposite.
Guess that is why there is chocolate and vanilla. Or Republicans and
Democrats.
I liked the trailer and it interested me in seeing the show. I want to
know
more! I want to see what this show is about.
Everything in it was attractive to me and left me wanting more. If I
lived
in that area - would definitely go to the show.
