On ebay last week, a group of 23 Punch puppets included two different sized Punches, a croc and a dragon. These all looked like English figures to my eyes, circa 1960s.

I have always thought that the crocodile's introduction into the
Punch and Judy Show was a take on the dragon from the story of St.
George and the Dragon which has been performed by puppeteers
for centuries.
