someone at another puppet site told me oxygenated bleach (you know,  
oxiclean laundry stain remover) added to the paper mache, or paper  
clay inhibits growth.  i just bought some for a batch, so we'll see...

one time i had an entire elementary class make houses for fantasy  
pets out of found items and sawdust clay.  the kids were SO PROUD!   
but after a few days the clay started molding and we had to have a  
ceremonial burial for them all.  the kids were so sad!  the  
eucalyptus oil i was told to put into it did not work

better living through chemicals!
