Another alternative is spring steel aka piano or music wire (or looking in the crit archives for more info). We (and many others) use spring steel most of the time, making a loop at the top which rides around a pin in the hand. The spring steel has a lot of give and bend to it and retains control, and returns easily to its straight form. It may be what someone referred to in a previous post. Spring steel can be purchased at some piano store, I guess, but we get ours from the hardware store. Comes in a large variety of gauges. Among the other things we have used are coat hangers, umbrella spokes, and on rare occasions ceiling hanging wire (which is too soft and pliable for most rod uses).
