Subject: Re: [Puptcrit] Women as dhalangs?

Hi Jamie,

Last summer I had the privilege of visiting Tamara and Max Fielding at their
home, helping Tamara select puppets from her impressive and vast collection
for inclusion in our "Puppets on the Sound" festival on Long Island. Their
home is a virtual museum, and upon entering one is transcended to an Indonesian
paradise. Every year Tamara travels to Indonesia and returns with the very
best puppets she can find. She surely has one of the finest collections in the
world.

I discussed the subject of female dalangs with Tamara, who is a remarkable
individual. What she does not mention on her web site is that a dalang is not
only a puppeteer, but also a religious priest, and females are not officially
recognized in that position. She is at the forefront, along with others
mentioned, that are changing tradition. Of course, this is an issue affecting all
the major religions.

I am extremely impressed with the number of female dalangs that Puptcrit
devotees came up with so quickly. You must contact Tamara as well as the others.
