If you go with paper mache over wire, use strips instead of pulp, and make 
sure it's s strong, thin paper, with a very flexible adhesive. 3 layers at 
least, but don,t go too crazy with them, they add weight.

My combo suggestion:

Coffee filters with diluted Weldbond (or a bookbinder's pva).
