I haven't seen the TV adapation you mention, but the original book does not 
mention deterioration of the creature, and it is definitely not a handsome 
person. The mere sight of him makes anyone scream, fight or faint.
Gee, won't that be hard to make into a puppet!

Maybe one movie version took the "mental deterioration" to be a physical 
one.
What's often confusing, is that after a movie comes out, some make a book 
based on the movie, leading many to believe it is the original story.
