If I perform for a charitable organization, I send an invoice for my usual performance fee with an additional line item listing a donation to the organization equal to the fee for the show. This leaves a balance due of $0. I request a letter from the organization recognizing our donation in the amount of the show, which I can then take as a tax deduction. Often they will cover transportation and other out-of-pocket expenses, as well. Exposure is never sufficient compensation for performing, especially with the spiraling price of gasoline. I explain to clients wanting a freebie that publicity and promotion are key components of show business and we expect our program to be advertised whenever we perform. Our participation gives them a product to advertise, and I am happy to offer promotional materials for their use if they hire us. It is their job as a producer to cover their costs, which includes our performance fee. -Steven-> **************Wondering what's for Dinner Tonight? Get new twists on family favorites at AOL Food.
