They needed us for 10 hours of continous fire-juggling - no pay, but "great exposure"... ?to what, I asked, "Great exposure to heat?" I then asked if the film crew was shooting for free - of course not. I had to laugh at them over the phone - and yes, they deserved it. There are events?that I would?consider working for free, but others that clearly take advantage of the artist. Therefore, I cannot afford 'free" showsl Jim Gamble ----- Original Message ---- From: Kismet <kismet-AT-bigpond.net.au> To: puptcrit-AT-puptcrit.org Sent: Sunday, June 1, 2008 3:21:02 AM Subject: Re: [Puptcrit] Free shows We often get asked to provide someone to do a gig, not always a puppeteer and I love the "Good opportuity for them to promote themselves" logic for doing shows for free......promote to who? People that are looking for free entertainers? Unfortunatley there are so many good people who burn themselves out trying to "promote" themselves by doing free shows. Its funny, we manage a biennial Festival where we donate about $10,000 dollars worth of hire, work and management fees...this year we said sorry but we arent available anymore.....they cancelled the festival....nice to feel needed but surely they realised that we weren't Santa Claus and could just keep on giving! Apparently not.... ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Dudley" <john.dudley-AT-telepuppets.com> To: <puptcrit-AT-puptcrit.org> Sent: Monday, May 19, 2008 8:07 PM Subject: [Puptcrit] Free shows > Bob, > I also had the same thing happen years ago for a charity dinner dance. > I asked if the caterers were giving their services - NO.
