Suki, your mentionning of a rattle reminds me of rainsticks.

Those are long tubes semi-filled with particules (rice, sand, stones) and 
that have inner obstacles inside (funnels, sticks) to slow down the 
movements of the particules. It generates sounds reminescent of rain or sea 
waves.

I'm thinking that a hollow puppet with a few compartments serving as 
rainsticks could bring something interesting!
Every move would make sounds, every extremity having its own personality of 
sound.
A violent dance or fight scene would turn the expression "shake the puppet" 
into a whole new meaning.
