Subject: [Puptcrit] public advertising

ADVERTISING to the PUBLIC: In Massachusetts and I would think in most areas, there are local papers that love having interesting articles, free press releases that they will publish.

Find out the deadlines and email to a number of area shoppers newspapers with a great jpg picture of one of the public shows and include a few paragraphs with the basic who, what, where, when and many will see. Parents who may be on the PTO event committee will see some favorites they will want to bring to a school.

If there is a local teacher/puppeteer that will be doing a public performance/workshop, let the local editors know, they often will enjoy interviewing them themselves for the paper. Over this next year, those in the Atlanta area should begin letting folks know that national and international puppeteers will be coming in July. Not just the metro papers but those in the one hour driving radius. Maybe a teacher or librarian would not be able to attend the whole week, but could do one day during the week and/or the Saturday session at a special introductory price. Many of the area librarians are involved with the summer reading program and can't get away for the whole festival time.

If information is sent in the winter, the Georgia state NEA/AFT newspapers would print at least a paragraph, especially if it can be worded, "AFT member from Georgia local ....., NAME, will be presenting a workshop for educators and librarians at the National Puppeteers of America Festival te week of July....., 2009. This is a great opportunity for NEA/AFT members to learn puppetry techniques that can be easily incorporated into standard based lessons across the curriculum.

 There
> should be advertising in the other trade magazines (some of which could
> probably be done in trade - a page in yours for a page in ours), in the
> Library system, to the general public in the paper, on TV and/or radio
> through a media sponsor, and so on. This is not likely to happen though
> with the festival being mostly closed to those who are not members. You
> just limit what you can do and attract with a "family reunion."
