Perhaps it's something like not being the one who really controls what you do. Or perhaps it's the subconscious. Or maybe it's just happy accidents. Yes, I now think most of my work is a lot of happy accidents, chosen. I try a lot of things, choose what I keep and what I drop. I do plan a bit, sometimes a lot, but I rarely stay stiff about it. I do have an initial line of direction, and always reach or exceed my objectives , but the way to get there is always full of unplanned variations and discoveries. The amount and quality of variations and accidents depends on how much leeway a customer leaves me. I do like some parameters and rules to work from. They help with the challenge. A friend of mine says it sounds too esoteric and I should never say that to potential employers or customers, but I still think it's accurate in my case: "The matter speaks to me". By that I mean that I keep an open eye to everything that happens, and make choices. Some of my best work was completely improvised, often started from an unimportant technical test. _______________________________________________ List address: puptcrit-AT-puptcrit.org Admin interface: http://lists.puptcrit.org/mailman/listinfo/puptcrit Archives: http://www.driftline.org
