New Javanese Shadows is an original interdisciplinary performance combining the art of Javanese shadow puppet theatre, the sonorous gamelan music of Central Java, and computer video imagery. Ancient and modern techniques manifest a tale based around the beloved iconic god-clown of Javanese shadow theatre, Semar. We follow him from his birth in heaven, through tests of his power (he swallowed the mountain of knowledge but couldn't digest it), to his arrival in our midst, as he is caught up in the world's endless problems and the entanglements of human folly. Musicians from Yogyakarta, Java and Vancouver's Gamelan Madu Sari, in collaboration with renowned puppeteer Seno Nugroho, come together in this ground-breaking integration of the classical and the contemporary. Vancouver's Javanese gamelan ensemble, Gamelan Madu Sari, has developed a close relationship with Seno. In July 2007 the group toured our original multi-media shadow play Semar's Journey in Java, collaborating with Seno on the shadow puppetry, and performing a new contemporary score for gamelan orchestra with his musicians. In addition to the creation of new puppets and a completely new story line, a special feature of Semar's Journey was the computer-enhanced video of Canadian painter/animator Aleksandra Dulic and computer arts guru Kenneth Newby. Their images combined onscreen with the stylized movements of the Javanese puppets, giving the show its own unique visual design. New Javanese Shadows is a further extension of this concept. _______________________________________________ List address: puptcrit-AT-puptcrit.org Admin interface: http://lists.puptcrit.org/mailman/listinfo/puptcrit Archives: http://www.driftline.org
