The sound is absorbed by the first row. Until you get stands you can get a wedge of wood under each speaker so that they point a bit more upwards. Being a solo performer stinks when it comes to the sound check. There's no one to be at the back of the house listening for sound levels. There are two thoughts with amplified voice. Dominance and reinforcement. With dominance you power your voice all of the time. Some groups I've worked with feel that it gives them more audience control and they don't have to shout thereby making the space more conversational and soothing. With reinforcement you power your voice just enough to get it to the back row.
