Subject: Re: [Puptcrit] Olympic opening ceremony

Dear Alan et al.
Here is the piece I submitted to the PuppeteersUK Newsletter which will give
you a bit more information. The times quoted are of course British time.

Marionettes at the Olympics

Those who had the time to watch the opening ceremony screened from 12.45 to
16.45 on 8 August will have seen a brief segment with marionettes much more
clearly than those sweating in the huge stadium. The cameras zoomed in to
four marionettists dressed in heavy ornate costumes standing on a moving
platform. They were each dancing a single marionette about 60cm high,
similarly dressed. For most of the time they moved in unison doing large
side steps (not very clever) and at one point jumping to sit on blocks
behind them. The interesting bit was the figure on the far right (audience)
which twirled a stick in its left hand, obviously operated by an experienced
performer. Unfortunately, this whole sequence was omitted from the evening
potted version.
