Subject: [Puptcrit] mini Stilts?

Hi all.

I'm already (or finally?) planning my halloween costume.
The head is already begun, it's a giant human skull, full-head mask.
Newspaper and tape form, made over a Duct Tape dummy of my head.
I dream of a full-head accurate foam cast replica of my head for such
projects. The Duct tape is not as precise as I like... The mask itself will
be made in paper mache strips, probably about 10-15 layers.
If I find the time and a way to do it, he'll have an articulated jaw,
directly activated by mine.

For the body, I was thinking of a simple large robe, "with a twist",
whatever I come up with at the time.
For once, I want to be taller than I am in everyday life. Maybe a foot or
two higher (so I can still fit in the doorways if I lean over a little).

Mini stilts would serve the purpose very well.
I don't know the term for them in English, but in French, they are called
"Coturnes".
Can somebody point me to directions for making a very sturdy pair?
They should be stable and comfortable.

I was thinking of making foot-thick soles on some shoes or boots, but that
(and the predicatable wobblyness)would look rather silly, wouldn't it? Or
would it?

The other, less "first person view" way would be to lift the character
itself above my own height.

Suggestions and links more than welcome!
