I'll second Mary's warning.  I've been present (and on stilts) when another
stilter went down and shattered both wrists.  It was a combination of not
enough practice, restricted vision from a mask, and trying to catch herself.
The very first lesson in stilting is never put your arms out to catch
yourself.  Pull your arms in and let your full body take the blow.

You are totally wrong in worrying about the extra weight.  Knowing a
performer who went down on a pair of homemade ones and shattered his
wrist, I've got to say that I'd put up with the weight for the
stability of painters stilts.
