Thanks for the reply.  Mel Helstein was probably the most hateful man  
I ever met.  He really had it out for me because I had traveled  
extensively, including Asia.  At 19, I had already seen Vietnamese  
water puppets, Bunraku, etc.  He may have hated students, but he  
certainly expected them to be a an empty vessel.  He pretty much  
turned me off puppetry for 20 years.
The program seems to have changed by the time you got there.  When I  
was there, it was Mel and one grad student. There was no way to avoid  
Mel.

I get out to LA occasionally.  I hope see you perform sometime.
