Subject: Re: [Puptcrit] College puppet programs

I've met a lot of new puppeteers that started out because they were
introduced to Puppetry while studiying actor Theatre in University. Either
it was part of the extra credit curriculum (extra credit courses are
mandatory here, you choose among a few options), ot they took an
independent workshop.
A surprising number of them converted to Puppetry as their main interest,
although they take some acting gigs to pay the bills.

An actress friend of mine got her start as a paid Puppeteer when I called
her up to be in a Halloween event, manipulating giant puppets with us. She
liked the experience, so a few months later, she took an intensive training
workshop with the same puppet company, and was chosen, well before the end
of training, as a member of their troup. She is now touring internationally
with them, a few times a year.

I believe a lot of Actors must find something pretty special about puppets,
if they suddenl;y choose to become puppeteers.

What do you think that may be?
