What you said about puppeteers and actors makes a lot of sense to me.
Indeed, I've seen attention-grabbing actors posing as puppeteers before, and 
the result was really bad.

The best puppeteers I've seen were always modest and focused on the puppet, 
on stage.
It felt like they were there, but as integral part of the puppet, and not 
the other way around.

I also know two puppeteers who started out as marching drummers in two 
different bands from different cities, joined a giant-puppet company, met 
there, and decided to join forces to create their own company, to do their 
prefered types of puppetry (and especially never have to perform with black 
hoods again).

Most puppeteers I met started in other art forms, usually very different 
from puppetry, but somehow that background came in as great resources for 
the way they approached and did Puppetry.
