Subject: Re: [Puptcrit] academic actor training programs

What I feel is missing as far as puppetry programs is the middle
ground. There are many fine actors who have never been through a
university program, but still have received very good training as
actors. They have studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts,
HB Studios, The Neighborhood Playhouse, The Pasadena Playhouse, etc.
It seems a shame that there are not similar institutions for
puppeteers. Not everyone can afford or devote the time to a full time
university program. Tony Sarg's classes produced more than a few
professional puppeteers. The best part of these acting programs is
that it allows theater professionals to teach a class when they are at
liberty. One can take a class from Estelle Parsons, Joanne Woodward,
etc.
One of the problems with university programs is that the teachers are
often (but not always) academics not puppeteers or professional
puppeteers. It would be nice to have a program that would allow
professional puppeteers the opportunity to teach without having to be
committed to an entire school year or the bureaucracy of universities.
