Subject: [Puptcrit] georgian Marionette- for Hobey Ford

Hi Hobey,

I, too, have a Georgian marionette that my mother-in-law got for me while traveling in Georgia. She bought it from the maker following a art and performing art show arranged for the small tour group she was with. It was made by Irma Kadze and I have her bio somewhere. She was making puppets and performing as early as the 1960's, among other places she studied at a university in Tbilisi. The control, too, is vertical with fewer strings than the control you show, I think, and the movement is very good. The marionette is a belly dancer with no belly and no legs. She spins extremely well and is very pretty. She does many dance movements like hip lifts, shimmies, isolations, etc. Real full sized belly dancers have liked her presentation of them.

Anyway it was nice to hear about other Georgian puppets. My mother-in-law's next trip is to Mali... hmmmm...puppetry in Mali... could be interesting....:)
