Calder was not merely credited as the inventor of mobiles. 

HE WAS THE INVENTOR of mobiles.

When you think about it, PUPPETS were the first mobiles (along with wind chimes).

Even whirligigs can be thought of as a form of mobile or puppet

It was a natural progression from his wire sculpture puppets to animated sculptural shapes. With his mobiles, balance was as important as in marionettes. His table top circus figures MOVED. His mobiles MOVED. Calder was a good example of an artist influenced by puppetry.
