The butterfly is sheet foam and has tiny tubes in the front edge of each
wing section. It is folded inside the chrysalis. Once the chrysalis opens
and the butterfly hangs from its velcro feet, I push rigid wires into the
tubes which have rod handles on them to flap the wings. I switch the
chrysalis twice during the performance. The last one is plastic which I did
a vacu-form kind of fabrication, without the vacumn. I heat the sheet
plastic and form it around a wooden carving of the chrysalis. I have a cut
out of the negative shape of the profile of the chrysalis Which I press down
as the plastic softens.
