Subject: Re: [Puptcrit] Dancing lights

Our light puppets are black contact paper over mylar plexi with images by exacto knife and peeled away. "Leggy" images work best. Flex creates movement, achieved in indian style seated position, insides of knees and hands control four corners. Lighting is from slide projector positioned beneath play area, with soup can with 1/2 hole in bottom over lens to increase intensity and reduce spillage; positon extra fans at unit to thwart overheating, because projector bulbs are costly. Best to have alternating puppeteers, with dual setups, behind a low blind to keep the secret. The more images the better, 20 seconds or less apiece keeps the magic going. Stack them next to you, upside down, in reverse order of the story (end on bottom). Black box or walls are preferable; they look better than on white, and music is essential. Especially drums. Keep them clean so they don't stick together. Keep them warm so they don't snap; they are one of a kind unless you have a pounce pattern.Taping edges avoids injury; they have a limited lifespan, and snap when stressed.
