The structure of this backpack puppet reminds me of the similar ones Peter Minshall has made for Trinidad Carnival and for the opening ceremonies of the Atlanta Olympics, especially the leg/knee/foot assembly...

Note the (conscious?) naivete of the iReport description: "Have you ever wondered how art and politics coincide?... As artists gather to encourage early voting, the statuesque Obama puppet stands tall and appears to be getting the message out. Does art motivate a community to vote? This street performance suggests that it will."

To me, the tone of the piece implies that the concept of art and politics being connected is somehow novel. It's hard to imagine such simple questions being asked of, say television performance. It's hard to imagine someone asking "Do Saturday Night Live, the David Letterman Show, the Colbert Report, and The View motivate a community to vote? Recent episodes of these shows suggest that they do." The fact that politics and art, and specifically politics and puppet theater, have been connected for centuries is not so well known, and thus is constantly being discovered.
