The pre-CIA was various Department of State programs, culminating with  
the OSS. Before the USA entered the wars they were Asian or European  
wars. Our entry made them World Wars.

One of my favorite books is the novel/alternate history is FATHERLAND  
by Robert Harris

WWII was before my time. I do not know what I would have done. I  
refused induction during the Vietnam invasion and lost several friends  
to that undeclared war. My undergrad Geography professor was a CIA  
recruiter. One of my Art professors was a Quaker and was put in a  
concentration camp during WWII. He was a great storyteller.

I agree that "heads of state, along with popes and other figures are  
often satirized as puppets." They may also be portrayed as puppets for  
non saterical purposes. I'd enjoy reading, hearing and seeing (photos,  
video)about what puppeteers are doing. (props to Independent Eye for  
sharing process, scripts, visuals etc.)
