Reay Kaplan and Julie Dansby Scarborough did a ensemble puppetry workshop at
the 2007 National Festival and discussed Bunraku techniques that they had
used at the Centre for Puppetry Arts. They also recommended the "baseball
hood" idea (which I had never seen before, and thought was brilliantly
obvious), although I don't think they cut the brim of the cap at all. I
don't think it's necessary and they said the hoods work brilliantly.
