Thanks Steve, that cheers me up a bit. "Permanent" is probably the best
description but sounds and feels good. We sometimes refer to
'building-based companies' to differentiate them from touring companies. I
have forwarded your message to Ian Woods the administrator at NPT.
The Harlequin Puppet Theatre in Wales opened in 1958 and has just celebrated
its 50th birthday.

Just a quick mention of the Puppetry Arts Institute in Independence MO
founded in 2001 which has a museum devoted to Hazelle Rollins and a
"permanent" theatre

Ray
28 years is a great accomplishment

I have been pondering the term "permanent" theatre, and I have also been
wondering what is the oldest "permanent" puppet theatre in operation in a
particular building

Those other permanent theatres, the ones for humans, have not always been
so permanent either

The Globe lasted for 14 years 1599-1612, the second globe on the same site
lasted for 28 years until the puritans closed it down. Globe #3 appeared in
1997

There have been 4 theatres on the same site in London, all called the Drury
Lane, The first one lasted 9 years before it burned, The current one is 196
years old.

Puppet theatres?
Turnabout and Kungsholm "permanent" theatres lasted for less than 20 years

Margo Lovelace had a theatre in Pittsburgh from about 1962-1977

Do we the count the Standwells as a permanent theatre? for over 20 years
they entertained 24 lucky viewers in a theatre in a private apartment on
Central Park West in New York.

Research for contenders for oldest puppet theatre building in Europe-at
same location
1.Palermo, Italy, Sicilian marionettes, current theatre space set up 1933
(other candidates?)
2.Toone Theatre, Brussels Belgium, current theatre first opened 1966 in 17th
century building
3.Salzburg was in the same space 1913-1962 (49 years) current theatre first
used 1971 in an 18th century building
4.Hanneschen Theatre in Koln (Cologne) Germany one of the oldest puppet
traditions in Europe, set up in its current space in 1938

5.The oldest Czech puppet theatre building dates from 1920 in Louny
6.The Empire of Puppets in Prague was built in 1925. UNIMA was founded
there in 1929

7.My candidate for the oldest theatre building in Europe created for
puppets would be the theatre in Munich built in 1900 (did it survive the
war? it could be a rebuilt theatre. not 100% sure)

Would love to hear more on the subject.
