Subject: [Puptcrit] Philippe Genty

Back in the 1960s Philippe Genty was touring the world. He performed and also made a film shown on Public Television, "Blue Like an Orange" may have been the title of the film.

He also performed for a Puppeteers of America Festival at Asilomar CA. I rode with him from Asilomar to Los Angeles via scenic Highway #1 ---and enroute he was stopped by an officer of California Highway Patrol for violating umpteen laws (including speeding, driving on wrong side of road and such.) He was told he'd have to attend a court hearing for all the offenses, but he said he was leaving the USA in a matter of days. The officer said he should write to traffic court that he was leaving the country, and that the judge would probably cancel the charges, and if a letter was not sent, the traffic fines would double automatically, world without end. Well, the letter was never sent, and the fines reached an improbable level. The next time some years later, Philippe performed in California was a single booking just over the border from Nevada in a desert town, followed by a hasty departure I missed that performance since I did not know about it in time to go. The Los Angeles Times gave his show an ecstatic review, comparing it to Mummenshanz (tho actually Philippe preceded Mumenshanz) and the Times asked why such a show did not reach Los Angeles. If it HAD Philippe might have ended up in an L.A, jail.

Finally the traffic record was dropped. Philippe made anoher appearance in California at Loyola-Marymount University near LAX (airport) to glowing reviews.

He was a big hit at the 1965 UNIMA Fest in Bucharest and many other places, but he was not the best driver.

Thanks! Just what I was looking for.

- In my enthusiasm, I believe I had misspelled the name when I first
tried to search.
