Forgive me if someone has already written this, but what you want is not a dremel nor even a foredom flexible shaft. No, THE tool for carving wood is called a die grinder. Most have 1/4" collets, and can receive bits as rough as rasps down to very fine carbide cutters. There are air powered versions and ones with electric motors.These tools have the power to remove stock and the rpms ( 26000 ) to cut without applying a lot of pressure to your piece. ( as opposed to chisel and mallets, for example ) Between one of these and a bandsaw, I was once upon a time whipping out carved wood marionette hands ( articulated, no less ) is less than an hour.

    I currently have one made by Dewalt which is okay, though I have to wrap tape around the switch so that the thing will run without me holding it down. I had a Bosch one which cost more but was better because you can hold it better, especially important when you are doing close quarter type carving.
