Subject: [Puptcrit] On loving puppets

Oh, I hear you, Mathieu!

Puptcrit, to me, is this wonderful world community full of people who like
the same things I do: creating puppets, watching shows, doing shows, and
just communicating by puppet. It is so varied and has infinite
possibilities, one can never get bored.

When I was married, I tried to supplement our income by making puppets but
where I was, it was so hard to make the money needed for a family where my
husband's income wasn't very much either. But I always remember the time I
finished my Punch and Judy and made a set for Alma Beisel as very soul
fulfilling. I was complete when turning celastic, mache, fabric, and other
found materials into something life transforming.

As a child, I had two really good experiences. One was in third grade, when
a friend's mom made papier mache puppets with us just as a fun activity. My
mom never did that! Another came in fourth grade when we wrote scripts, made
sock puppets, and performed the plays. Then the teacher gave out awards and
I, probably the only time in my life, received the Best Actress Award. Hmmm,
couldn't get in the talent show but I could act behind a stage!

My favorite show was Davy and Goliath every Sunday morning and Shari Lewis.
I could really connect with Lamb Chop. When I was pregnant, I began watching
Mr. Rogers a lot and continued after Laura was born. And meeting Jim Henson
and Bil Baird was truly inspirational!

I am looking forward to making that puppet at Christmas. Were there any more
instructions about the project?
I have to work and I am a decent special education teacher, but I really
miss doing puppets fulltime. Years ago, with Va.Beach Parks and Recreation,
I was doing the CandyCane Express, with puppets and dressed as a clown, for
the special education school. It was a warm experience. Who ever thought
then that I would be teaching these kids years later?

Puppets and Special kids are more accepting than most other people.

Please send more info. About the Christmas project.
